Freeman Field Makes An Impression On Twins' All-Star Closer

Ithaca College's Freeman Field has hosted a number of NCAA regional tournaments; one of them helped lead -- eventually -- to a Major League Baseball all-star to donate toward a new field at his own alma mater.

Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan, who played for Stony Brook when the school competed at the Division III level, recently announced a $500,000 gift toward a new field, which will bear his name, for the Sea Wolves. Nathan explained how part of his reasoning was to ensure that Stony Brook would not suffer the same fate as it did in 1995, when the Sea Wolves were unable to host an NCAA Regional despite being the region's top seeded team. The regional wound up being hosted by Ithaca for the fourth time in five years.
