Hamburg & Francis Take New Baseball Positions

Fritz Hamburg and Chris Francis, former Bomber baseball players who also spent time on the coaching staff at their alma mater, have both been named to coaching roles at new schools.

Hamburg, an all-American catcher on Ithaca's 1988 national championship team, was recently named head coach at Division I St. Joseph's. The 2007 ABCA Assistant Coach of the Year while at the U.S. Military Academy, he joins two other current Division I head coaches who played for Bomber coach George Valesente: Army's Joe Sottolano and Pennsylvania's John Cole. Valesente is the only active coach -- at any level of college baseball -- to have coached three current Division I head coaches.

Francis, a Bomber pitcher and former assistant at Rochester and Virginia Wesleyan, is an assistant coach at Division II Mansfield. The Mountaineers had been a regular part of Ithaca's schedule for years, but have not faced the Bombers since 2005.
